First Dominion

The First Dominion marks the beginning of organised cultivation at the southern tip of Africa. When a small settlement was established in 1652, agriculture quickly followed as the land was explored and planted. Just a few years later, in 1659, the first wine was produced from the young vineyards, marking the start of a tradition that would endure for centuries.

During this era, early growers learned to work with unfamiliar soils, climates, and landscapes, laying the foundations for the Cape’s emerging wine culture.

Foundations of the Cape

The First Dominion marks the beginning of cultivation at the southern tip of Africa. In 1652, settlers established the first permanent outpost, laying the foundations for agriculture and trade. Just a few years later, in 1659, the first wine was produced from the newly planted vines.

This era established the earliest traditions of cultivation and laid the groundwork for what would become a lasting wine culture.
