Cork Taint (TCA)
Cork taint is the most common cause of a genuinely "corked" bottle. It has nothing to do with tiny pieces of cork floating in the glass it is a chemical contaminant that strips a wine of its fruit and leaves a musty, damp smell in its place. It can affect any wine, from any producer, regardless of quality, and is entirely a fault of the individual bottle rather than the winemaking.
What does it smell like?
Wet cardboard, damp newspaper, a musty basement or a mouldy dishcloth. Even at low levels it flattens the wine's fruit and makes it smell dull and lifeless rather than actively "bad."
The telltale sign is not just the musty smell itself, but the absence of fruit underneath it the wine tastes shorter and less vivid than it should.
Aroma Classification
Cork taint sits outside the normal primary, secondary and tertiary framework entirely. It is not created by the grape, the winemaking or bottle ageing it is a contamination fault carried into the bottle by the closure itself.
Nature's Influence
Climate
Cork taint has no relationship to climate, vintage or vineyard site. It is caused by a compound called 2,4,6-trichloroanisole (TCA), which forms when naturally occurring fungi in cork bark react with chlorine-based compounds, most often during the cork's own processing and bleaching.
Because the human nose is extraordinarily sensitive to TCA, some tasters can detect it at concentrations as low as a few parts per trillion long before it would register on any other measure of wine quality.

Maturation
Cork taint is introduced by the closure, not by how the wine was matured. It becomes apparent once the wine is bottled and sealed, and can appear at any point afterwards sometimes immediately, sometimes only after months or years in bottle.
A corked bottle does not improve with further ageing the musty character remains and typically becomes more obvious as the wine's own fruit fades.
This is one of the main reasons many producers have shifted to screwcap and technical closures, which eliminate the risk of TCA taint entirely.

Learn to Recognise It
- Does the wine smell musty, damp or like wet cardboard rather than fruity?
- Does the fruit seem muted or simply absent, even though the wine should be young and vibrant?
- Does the finish feel unusually short and flat?
- Does a second bottle of the same wine taste completely different and far more expressive?
The clearest confirmation of cork taint is opening a second bottle of the identical wine if it tastes bright and fruity where the first was dull and musty, the first bottle was corked.
Cork taint is a reminder that not every flaw in a wine traces back to the vineyard or the winemaker's choices. Some outcomes are decided by the smallest, least visible details a single contaminated closure sealing away everything the Forces and Choices before it had built. It teaches patience and discernment: to judge a wine fairly, sometimes you must first rule out whether you are truly tasting the wine at all.
TCA is detectable by the human nose at concentrations of just a few parts per trillion roughly equivalent to a single drop diluted into several Olympic swimming pools. It is one of the most sensitive smells the human nose can register.
