The Nature of the Cultivar

Furmint is a white Vitis vinifera variety from Hungary and the principal grape of Tokaj. Genetic evidence indicates a probable natural cross between Gouais blanc and Alba imputotato. The vine is moderately to strongly vigorous, upright and suited to short pruning; flowering can produce millerandage. It buds shortly after Chasselas but ripens late. Small bunches and large berries yield substantial wines with naturally high acidity. The grape is comparatively neutral in primary aroma, so site, ripeness and method strongly shape expression. Healthy fruit can give citrus, apple, pear, quince, herbs and a firm savoury line. Passerillage and beneficial Botrytis concentrate apricot, honey, spice and sweetness, while uncontrolled grey rot destroys purity. Its strength is structural versatility; its risk is that the long season needed for flavour and botrytis also raises disease and harvest-selection pressure.

Climate & Season

Furmint needs a long, even season rather than relentless heat. High acidity remains pronounced at maturity, but late ripening exposes fruit to autumn rain and grey rot. Cool conditions may leave severe acidity and lean flavour; excessive heat raises alcohol and depletes delicate aroma. Dry wine needs a clear, dry finish. Noble rot needs humid infection periods alternating with dry, breezy weather so Botrytis concentrates rather than spoils. Vintage decides both quality and viable style.

Water & Exposure

Moderate water supports berry growth and canopy function through the extended season. Canopy & Crop

Remove congestion early, position shoots and expose bunches progressively. Maintain airflow without stripping away heat protection. Monitor fruit set because millerandage and clone can alter yield and bunch form. Crop level must permit complete ripening before autumn conditions deteriorate.

Harvest Window
