Muscat d'Alexandrie
Muscat d'Alexandrie is a white Vitis vinifera of ancient Mediterranean origin, known in South Africa as Hanepoot. VIVC registers Muscat of Alexandria as variety 8241; DNA identifies it as Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains crossed with Heptakilo, also called Axina de Tres Bias. The slightly vigorous vine has a drooping habit, very large berries and bunches, mid-season budburst and late ripening. It needs heat for sugar, flavour and wood maturity, adapts well to drought and favours gravelly, acidic or decalcified soils. Powdery mildew, grey rot and insects are principal risks. The grape serves wine, table-grape and raisin markets. Dry, sparkling, naturally sweet, dried-grape and fortified wines carry unmistakable floral, fresh-grape, citrus and honey notes. Clean fruit, acidity and oxygen control decide whether that perfume feels radiant or heavy.
A hot, dry, long season is the natural fit: Plantgrape places maturity about four weeks after Chasselas and states that heat is essential for full ripening and lignification. Useful night-time relief preserves acidity and floral lift. Humidity or rain near harvest raises grey-rot pressure in large bunches, while extreme heat can dehydrate berries and flatten freshness.
Gravelly, acidic or decalcified soils are documented references, and drought adaptation suits warm Mediterranean and Cape sites. Even so, a deep root zone and steady late-season water supply help large berries ripen without abrupt shrivel. Avoid fertile, wet ground that drives shade and rot, or shallow hot soil that concentrates sugar before flavour and acidity align.
Warm benches, open flats, terraces and sheltered slopes can work when airflow and drainage are secure. Sunny exposure completes late ripening; moderate altitude or a cooler aspect helps retain freshness in very hot districts. Protect bunches from harsh afternoon sun and drying wind, and avoid humid hollows or sites too cool to ripen wood and fruit reliably.
Short-pruned gobelet is the traditional form and suits the drooping habit. Supported cordon or VSP improves access and airflow where needed. Distribute shoots and keep bunches lightly shaded, not buried or fully exposed.
Use short spur pruning, setting bud number to vine capacity and intended market. Dry, sweet, table and raisin routes need different crops. Avoid over-cropping, but not so severely that berries race toward sugar and sunburn.
Open the canopy for airflow and powdery-mildew protection while retaining dappled shade. Manage insects, bunch contact and irrigation uniformity. Moderate crop before veraison and remove damaged fruit as sugar rises.
Define the style first. Pick dry or sparkling fruit on acidity, citrus-floral flavour and clean skins; sweet or fortified fruit needs more sugar and Muscat intensity. Track pH, acidity, rot and dehydration with sugar. Selective passes can separate fresh and late fractions.
Enhance. Protect primary Muscat perfume, fresh fruit and clarity. 3 — Balance suits fuller dry white; 4 — Develop suits naturally sweet, dried-grape or fortified wine.
Sort grey rot, insects and sunburn rigorously. Whole-bunch pressing or gentle crushing suits dry wine; cool, limited skin contact can increase aroma. Sweet or fortified routes may use longer maceration or dried fruit. Separate press fractions.
Cool, protected fermentation retains volatile Muscat character. Choose yeast, turbidity and temperature for aromatic release without stripping perfume. Arrest sweet wine by cooling, filtration or fortification at the intended balance. Skin maceration needs hygiene and oxygen control.
Stainless steel and early bottling preserve grape, flower and citrus. Lees or neutral vessels add texture without masking aroma. Sweet fortified wine accepts large old oak and oxidative development toward marmalade, caramel and nuts. Use new oak sparingly.
Protect dry wine from oxygen and usually avoid malolactic fermentation where acidity is modest. Sweet wine needs exact sugar, alcohol and microbial stability. Fine and filter after trials; a small aromatic component can lift a neutral blend.
Medium White. Highly aromatic and generous, with moderate body, modest acidity and high sugar potential. Light, sparkling, sweet and fortified routes are alternatives.
Moderate body; low tannin and modest acidity; high sugar potential; pale straw-gold. Early picking is lighter; late harvest, drying or fortification adds richness and amber colour.
Fresh grape, lemon, orange, peach and apricot; raisin, fig and marmalade when mature.
Orange blossom, rose and fresh grape meet peach and honey; age adds marmalade, caramel, ginger and nuts.
Dry and sparkling wines favour youth. Balanced sweet and fortified wines can age for decades, developing amber colour, marmalade, caramel, spice, tea and nuts.
