Oxidation is what happens when a wine is exposed to too much oxygen over its life, whether through a failing closure, poor storage or age itself. Fresh fruit character fades and is replaced by nutty, bruised-apple, sherry-like aromas desirable by design in a handful of fortified styles, but a fault in almost everything else.

  • Was the wine stored somewhere warm, bright, or upright for a long period?

Colour is often the fastest clue, oxidation shows in the glass before you even bring it to your nose.
