Reduction happens when a wine has too little oxygen exposure during its life, allowing sulphur compounds to build up into a stubborn, struck-match smell. Unlike most faults, mild reduction is often reversible the same aeration that would ruin a delicate wine can blow it off entirely.
What does it smell like?
Struck match, rubber, boiled cabbage, or a flinty, gunpowder-like edge that can mask the fruit underneath.
A little reductive character can read as a savoury, mineral flint note; too much becomes overtly rubbery or eggy.

Learn to Recognise It
- Is there a struck-match or rubbery smell on first pour?
- Does the aroma change or lessen after vigorous swirling or decanting?
- Is the wine sealed under screwcap or another low-oxygen closure?
- Does fruit character emerge once the reductive note fades?
If aeration resolves it, it was reductive rather than a permanent fault, this is the single most useful diagnostic test.
Reduction is a reminder that balance runs in both directions, too little of something can be as disruptive as too much. It shows that a flaw is not always permanent; sometimes an outcome simply needs a little more exposure to the world before its true character can emerge.
