Reduction

Reduction happens when a wine has too little oxygen exposure during its life, allowing sulphur compounds to build up into a stubborn, struck-match smell. Unlike most faults, mild reduction is often reversible the same aeration that would ruin a delicate wine can blow it off entirely.

Common misconception

Is reduction the same as a corked or oxidised wine?

No, it is essentially the opposite problem to oxidation, and unrelated to cork taint. Reduction comes from too little oxygen, and unlike most faults, it is often temporary and can be blown off with aeration.

  • Is there a struck-match or rubbery smell on first pour?
  • Does the aroma change or lessen after vigorous swirling or decanting?
  • Is the wine sealed under screwcap or another low-oxygen closure?
  • Does fruit character emerge once the reductive note fades?

If aeration resolves it, it was reductive rather than a permanent fault, this is the single most useful diagnostic test.
