The Force

What is Soil?

Soil is the environment in which a vine’s roots live. It is made from different combinations of sand, silt, clay, rock, organic matter, water and minerals.

But soil is more than what it is made of. Its physical properties determine how easily roots can grow and find water, while its chemical properties determine what nutrients are available when they get there.

Even within the same vineyard, these conditions can change dramatically from one row to the next.

Depth, texture, rock, compaction and water retention determine how easily roots can move through the soil and find the water they need.

What can the vine access?

pH, salinity, organic matter and nutrients determine the chemical environment surrounding the roots and what is available to the vine.

How hard does the vine have to work?

Some soils make life relatively easy. They are deep, accessible and hold plenty of water. Others are shallow, rocky, compacted or fast-draining, forcing the vine to work harder for the resources it needs.

Four main properties shape that environment.

Texture

What is it made of? The balance of sand, silt and clay affects how quickly water moves through the soil and how much is retained.

Rock

How much usable soil is there? Stones and gravel occupy space, influence drainage and can reduce the amount of soil available to store water.

Depth

How far can the roots go? Deep soils provide a larger reservoir for roots to explore. Shallow soils restrict the available rooting zone.

Compaction

How easily can roots move? Loose, well-structured soils are easier to penetrate. Dense or compacted layers can restrict roots and the movement of water and air.

How demanding is the root environment?

More demanding does not mean better. Too little challenge can encourage excessive growth; too much can restrict the vine. Balance matters.

CHEMICAL PROPERTIES

What can the vine access?

Reaching the soil is only half the story. Its chemistry determines which nutrients are available to the roots and how easily the vine can absorb them.

pH

Measures how acidic or alkaline the soil is. This strongly influences the availability of nutrients to the vine.

Salinity

Measures the concentration of soluble salts. Excessive salt can make it difficult for roots to absorb water.

Nutrient Availability

Nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and many other nutrients support vine growth. The right balance matters more than simply having more.

Organic Matter

Supports soil life, nutrient cycling, soil structure and the ability of the soil to hold water.

ITS CONSEQUENCE

Why does it matter?

Together, the physical and chemical properties of soil create the vine’s root environment.

They influence how easily the vine finds water, how far its roots can explore, which nutrients it can access and how vigorously it grows. These conditions influence how the vine responds to the season and how its grapes develop and ripen.

There is no perfect soil. Different soils simply create different conditions.

THE ROOTS

Does struggle mean deeper roots?

Not necessarily.

When water and nutrients are harder to find, roots may explore a greater volume of soil looking for them. But roots can only go where the soil allows them to go. Bedrock, severe compaction, poor drainage or extreme conditions can restrict them completely.

The goal is not maximum struggle. It is the right balance between challenge and opportunity.

The grower cannot easily change the ground beneath the vineyard, but they can choose how to respond to it — through irrigation, rootstock, cultivation, cover crops and vineyard management.

The soil creates the conditions. The grower makes the choices. The vine reveals the outcome.

Did you know?

Two vines planted only metres apart can experience completely different worlds beneath the surface. One may have metres of deep, accessible soil while the other encounters rock almost immediately. Above ground they may look similar. Below ground, their conditions can be entirely different.
