The Nature of the Cultivar

Tinta Amarella is the South African Wine of Origin name for the Portuguese red Vitis vinifera cultivar registered by VIVC as Trincadeira, variety 15685. In Portugal it is widely called Trincadeira, Tinta Amarela or Trincadeira Preta; no confirmed parentage is recorded in the principal identity sources used here. The variety is important in Alentejo, Tejo, Douro and Dão, appearing in dry reds, regional blends and Port. It buds and ripens around mid-season in Portuguese comparative data. The vine is vigorous and semi-erect, produces abundant foliage and can carry high but irregular yields. Medium, very compact bunches and high sensitivity to oidium, bunch rot and other vineyard diseases make dry air, an open canopy and clean fruit decisive. Warm to hot, dry conditions suit Tinta Amarella because heat supports full flavour while low harvest humidity reduces rot pressure. Airflow and cool nights help retain perfume and acidity.
