The Nature of the Cultivar

Verdelho is a Portuguese white cultivar registered by VIVC under the prime name Verdelho Branco, variety 22304. Historical and genetic research points to the Azores as its likely origin and identifies Savagnin as one probable parent; the second parent remains unresolved. It is distinct from Gouveio, Verdejo, Verdicchio, Verdello and Verdelho Tinto despite persistent homonym confusion. The moderate-to-strong, semi-erect to horizontal vine carries small to medium, often compact bunches and medium ellipsoid berries. It buds shortly after Chasselas and reaches mid-season maturity in southern France; in Madeira it is classed as early ripening and is normally picked by late September. The must combines moderate to good sugar with marked acidity. Dry wines range through lemon, green apple, pear, melon, pineapple, white flowers, herbs and saline minerality; Madeira traditionally turns it into golden, medium-dry fortified wine with tropical, smoky, nutty and caramelised development. The central challenge is freshness: warm sites ripen flavour easily, so water, crop, harvest and oxygen must protect acidity and fragrance without leaving the wine thin or allowing richness to become heavy.
