Overview
Alsace runs in a narrow north-south strip along the eastern foothills of the Vosges mountains, between the mountains and the Rhine plain, from around Strasbourg in the north to Mulhouse in the south. The Vosges create a strong rain-shadow effect, intercepting Atlantic weather systems before they reach the vineyards, making Alsace one of the driest and sunniest wine regions in France despite its northerly, continental setting. This dry, sunny climate, combined with an unusually varied geology, granite, limestone, marl, sandstone, volcanic rock and loess all occur within a short distance, gives Alsace one of the most complex terroir mosaics in the country, formalised in its 51 named Alsace Grand Cru vineyards. Alsace is almost uniquely French in labelling most of its wines by grape variety rather than place name alone, with Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris and Muscat recognised as the four noble varieties permitted in Grand Cru wines, alongside widely planted Pinot Blanc, Sylvaner and an increasing amount of Pinot Noir for red and rosé wines.

Alsace has a genuinely continental climate, warm summers and cold winters, but the defining force is the Vosges rain shadow, which intercepts moisture-bearing Atlantic weather and gives the region unusually low rainfall and high sunshine hours for its northerly latitude.

Rainfall & Water

Rainfall is low for a French wine region, generally in the 500–650 mm range, and among the driest anywhere in the country's major wine areas. This scarcity of rain, rather than an excess, is the region's principal water-related consideration.

Maritime / Continental Influence

Direct maritime influence is minimal, effectively blocked by the Vosges to the west; Alsace's climate instead reflects its position on the edge of the Rhine rift valley and its distance from any moderating coastal effect.

Mountains & Topography

The Vosges mountains, rising to over 1,400 metres just west of the vineyards, are the single most important geographic force in Alsace, creating the rain shadow that defines the region's climate and contributing much of the varied bedrock found across its soils.

Wind

Sheltered positioning in the lee of the Vosges reduces wind exposure across much of the vineyard land compared with more open regions, contributing to the generally stable, dry ripening conditions found here.

Vintage

Vintage variation is moderate: the region's characteristic dryness and sunshine make ripening more reliable than in cooler, wetter parts of France, though hail and occasional heavy summer storms remain a localised risk.
