Overview
Bergerac AOP extends across 90 communes in south-west Dordogne, centred on the Dordogne River rather than on the town alone. The river cuts east-west through a landscape of rolling plateaux, slopes and tributary valleys, creating varied drainage and exposure. Atlantic influence remains important but weakens from west to east, giving the appellation a temperate climate with greater inland contrast than Bordeaux closer to the ocean. Limestone, clay, sand, silt and river gravel occur in distinct combinations across the area. The result is a heterogeneous appellation supporting red and rosé wines from Bordeaux-family cultivars and dry whites led by Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon.

Climate & Season

Bergerac has a temperate oceanic climate with mild winters, warm summers and a long April-to-October growing season. Oceanic influence is strongest in the west and becomes less pronounced eastward, increasing temperature range and making local slope, altitude and exposure more important to ripening pace.

Rainfall & Water

Bergerac-Roumanière 1991–2020 normals indicate roughly 790–810 mm of annual rainfall near the appellation centre, spread through the year. Summer rain remains possible, while clay and deeper limestone-derived profiles store more water than free-draining gravel or sandy sites. Seasonal water status therefore varies markedly by soil.

Maritime / Continental Influence

Atlantic weather systems provide the dominant regional climate mechanism, but Bergerac lies farther inland than Bordeaux and the maritime signal weakens towards the eastern communes. The Dordogne River and its tributary valleys add local humidity, fog and airflow without creating the strong estuarine moderation seen farther west.

Mountains & Topography

Bergerac has no major mountains. The Dordogne and numerous perpendicular valleys dissect low plateaux into slopes, croupes and river terraces. These small changes in relief alter solar exposure, cold-air drainage, erosion and soil depth, creating substantial mesoclimate variation across the broad appellation.

Wind

No single named wind defines Bergerac. Prevailing Atlantic westerlies and south-westerlies deliver weather systems and ventilation, while valley orientation channels local airflow. Open slopes dry more quickly after rain; sheltered hollows can retain humidity and face greater fungal-disease pressure.

Vintage

Vintage sensitivity is moderate to high. Spring frost, flowering weather, summer heat and drought, mildew pressure, and rain around September–October can all change yield and ripening pace. The appellation's broad east-west span means the same season can affect western and eastern sites differently.
