Bergerac
Bergerac has a temperate oceanic climate with mild winters, warm summers and a long April-to-October growing season. Oceanic influence is strongest in the west and becomes less pronounced eastward, increasing temperature range and making local slope, altitude and exposure more important to ripening pace.
Bergerac-Roumanière 1991–2020 normals indicate roughly 790–810 mm of annual rainfall near the appellation centre, spread through the year. Summer rain remains possible, while clay and deeper limestone-derived profiles store more water than free-draining gravel or sandy sites. Seasonal water status therefore varies markedly by soil.
Atlantic weather systems provide the dominant regional climate mechanism, but Bergerac lies farther inland than Bordeaux and the maritime signal weakens towards the eastern communes. The Dordogne River and its tributary valleys add local humidity, fog and airflow without creating the strong estuarine moderation seen farther west.
Bergerac has no major mountains. The Dordogne and numerous perpendicular valleys dissect low plateaux into slopes, croupes and river terraces. These small changes in relief alter solar exposure, cold-air drainage, erosion and soil depth, creating substantial mesoclimate variation across the broad appellation.
No single named wind defines Bergerac. Prevailing Atlantic westerlies and south-westerlies deliver weather systems and ventilation, while valley orientation channels local airflow. Open slopes dry more quickly after rain; sheltered hollows can retain humidity and face greater fungal-disease pressure.
Vintage sensitivity is moderate to high. Spring frost, flowering weather, summer heat and drought, mildew pressure, and rain around September–October can all change yield and ripening pace. The appellation's broad east-west span means the same season can affect western and eastern sites differently.
- Ripening Window —Region II heat at the Bergerac reference station supports a long, moderate season; warmer slopes and eastern sectors ripen faster than shaded, elevated or wetter sites.
- Water & Vigour —Year-round rainfall and clay-bearing soils can support vigour, while gravel, sand and shallow limestone drain rapidly and become more drought-sensitive in hot summers.
- Exposure & Health —Rolling slopes and valley airflow can improve drainage and canopy drying, but humid oceanic weather keeps mildew and harvest-rain pressure materially relevant.

After cultivar and human choices intervene, Bergerac can produce supple red blends, dry aromatic whites and rosés across a broad range of sites.
