Cahors
Cahors has a transitional inland climate: temperate Atlantic influence remains important, but continental and Mediterranean effects strengthen the seasonal contrast. Warm, sunny summers and generally favourable autumns support late-ripening Malbec, while colder winters and spring temperature swings increase frost and flowering risk.
Annual rainfall varies materially across the appellation, broadly about 700–900 mm, with spring and autumn generally wetter and July-August drier. Deep valley alluvium can store substantial water, while gravelly terraces and thin limestone soils drain quickly and become more drought-sensitive during prolonged summer heat.
The Atlantic remains the principal source of weather and rainfall, but Cahors lies far enough inland for continental temperature range to become significant. Mediterranean influence can also reach the area from the south-east. The Lot itself moderates the valley floor locally and provides a permanent river-water presence.
The Lot is incised into the Quercy limestone plateau, creating meanders, stepped terraces, steep valley sides and higher causses. Vineyards occupy roughly 90–350 m elevation. Higher limestone sites are generally cooler at night and more exposed, while lower terraces are warmer, deeper-soiled and closer to the river.
Prevailing westerly airflow brings Atlantic weather, while the Autan can arrive from the south-east as a warm, dry wind, particularly in spring and autumn. It can accelerate drying after rain and favour late-season ripening, but wind exposure varies strongly between open plateaux and sheltered river bends.
Vintage sensitivity is moderate to high. Spring frost, coulure during flowering, summer drought and heat, thunderstorms, fungal pressure after wet periods and the timing of September–October rain all affect Malbec. Terrace depth, elevation and exposure can make the same vintage perform very differently across the appellation.
- Ripening Window —Region II heat at the Cahors reference site supports a moderately warm, relatively long season; exposed valley terraces ripen earlier than higher causses and cooler aspects.
- Water & Vigour —Deep alluvium and clay-bearing soils can sustain vigour, while free-draining gravel and shallow limestone create stronger water limitation as summer drought develops.
- Exposure & Health —Open slopes and the Autan can improve drying, but spring humidity, thunderstorms and sheltered river-valley sites keep fungal disease and flowering disruption relevant.
- Variation & Risk —Stepped terraces, slope aspect, altitude and the west-east climate gradient create strong mesoclimate variation; frost, drought, coulure and harvest rain remain principal risks.
