The district has a Mediterranean pattern of cool, wet winters and dry summers. Heat accumulation is cool to moderate but varies between exposed Peninsula vineyards and sheltered northern hills. An October-to-April season generally avoids sustained high summer heat.
Rainfall is winter-dominant and uneven. Constantia and Peninsula slopes can approach 1,000 mm annually, while northern sectors receive less. Winter recharge supports early growth; dry summers make soil depth, stored moisture and supplementary irrigation more important in drier sites.
The Atlantic Ocean and False Bay define the maritime influence. Sea breezes and periodic mist moderate daytime temperatures, with cooling shaped by distance, slope and shelter. Influence is strongest on exposed Peninsula sites but remains important in Durbanville and Philadelphia.
Table Mountain, Constantiaberg and Peninsula ranges shape the south; Tygerberg and Philadelphia hills shape the north. Vineyards range from low coastal positions to about 380 m. Slope and aspect alter exposure, drainage, airflow and ripening pace.
Summer south-easterly and southerly winds carry cool maritime air inland and ventilate canopies. Open slopes gain cooling and faster drying, while strong wind around flowering can reduce fruit set or damage young shoots in exposed vineyards.
Vintage variation is driven mainly by winter rainfall, spring wind, heat extremes and rain during ripening. Maritime moderation limits sustained heat, but drought, heat spikes or humid late-season weather can affect wards and exposures very differently.
- Ripening Window —A Region II-III heat range supports slow, extended ripening on exposed coastal sites, while warmer sheltered hills advance earlier cultivars.
