Chianti Classico's warm-temperate Mediterranean climate delivers hot summer days, often 28–32°C, moderated by cool nights at altitude that can fall to around 15°C. An April-to-October growing season provides secure ripening for Sangiovese's characteristically late harvest.
Annual rainfall of 600–800 mm falls mainly in winter and spring, recharging soil moisture ahead of the growing season. Late-summer dryness generally favours a clean, well-timed harvest, though drought stress is an increasing concern in warmer vintages.
Not a defining regional force: Chianti Classico is inland Tuscany, well removed from coastal influence. Moderation instead comes from elevation and Apennine airflow rather than any sea or large water body.
Rolling hills rising from the Apennine foothills give Chianti Classico its defining terrain. Mid-level slopes of 250–600 metres benefit from sunlight and cooling breezes, while premium alberese sites cluster between roughly 400 and 550 metres, where acidity and structure are most pronounced.
Cooling breezes moving off the Apennine foothills lower night-time temperatures and aid canopy ventilation, without forming a single named, dominant wind system; their effect is felt mainly as an amplifier of the region's altitude-driven diurnal range.
Vintage variation is driven chiefly by spring frost risk, summer drought and heat stress, and the risk of rain arriving before a fully ripe Sangiovese harvest is complete. Warming trends have increasingly shifted the main risk toward drought rather than under-ripeness.
