Citrusdal Valley is a Wine of Origin district in South Africa's Olifants River Region, centred on the lower, warmer valley around Citrusdal rather than the elevated Citrusdal Mountain vineyards. The Olifants River runs through a landscape enclosed by the Cederberg to the east and Olifants River mountains to the west. Hot, dry summers create high heat accumulation, while winter rainfall is modest and irrigation from the Clanwilliam Dam and river system is fundamental to reliable vine growth. Sandy alluvial soils derived largely from Table Mountain sandstone dominate the valley floor, with loamier and gravelly variations near slopes and river terraces. The district favours dependable ripening across both white and red cultivars.

Summer rainfall is limited, so vineyards rely strongly on irrigation supplied through the Olifants River and Clanwilliam Dam system.

Atlantic influence is indirect. The ocean is a major regional climate driver, but Citrusdal Valley lies inland and is more sheltered than coastal or high mountain sites. Cooler western air can temper some afternoons, yet the valley floor retains substantially more summer heat than neighbouring Citrusdal Mountain and Piekenierskloof.
