Corbières
Corbières is predominantly Mediterranean: warm to hot, dry and sunny, with an April-to-October growing season. INAO describes annual means falling from about 15.4°C near the coast to 13.4°C toward the western edge. Heat accumulation spans roughly Winkler Regions III-IV, with altitude and exposure materially slowing some inland sites.
Rainfall is limited and strongly uneven, with the driest littoral sectors receiving under about 450 mm annually and mountain sectors above 700 mm. Much falls in spring and autumn, sometimes in intense episodes. Dry summers make rooting depth, soil water storage and, where legally authorised, irrigation important to vine balance.
The Mediterranean Sea is a defining eastern influence, softening coastal temperature swings and feeding humid maritime airflow. Moving west, elevation rises and direct marine influence weakens; some western sectors experience a transition toward Atlantic and mountain effects. This east-west gradient helps explain the appellation's wide range of ripening conditions.
The appellation crosses a fractured landscape of basins, plateaux, valleys, ridges and foothills between sea level and about 400 m of vineyard elevation. Relief generally rises westward toward the Corbières massif. Slope, shelter and aspect therefore change solar exposure, drainage, cold-air movement and the timing of ripening over short distances.
Wind is persistent. The Tramontane or Cers, generally from the west to north-west, is dry and often strong, increasing airflow, evapotranspiration and canopy drying. In spring and autumn, the Marin brings humid Mediterranean air and rain. Wind can reduce disease pressure after rain, but severe exposure also increases water demand and physical stress.
Vintage variation is driven less by lack of heat than by water timing and extremes. Winter-spring reserves, summer drought and heat, humid maritime episodes, heavy autumn rain and occasional damaging wind can all shift yield, disease pressure and harvest pace. Higher and western sectors respond differently from the dry coastal and central zones.

Mediterranean heat and seasonal rain interact with persistent Cers winds, rising relief and a varied limestone, marl, sandstone and schist geology.
They create warm, dry ripening conditions with strong ventilation, uneven water availability and pronounced east-west and altitude-driven variation.
After cultivar and human choices intervene, Corbières commonly yields ripe, structured Mediterranean blends, while cooler or deeper-soil sites can retain a slower, fresher profile.
