Overview
The Côte de Beaune runs from Ladoix-Serrigny in the north to Maranges in the south, forming the southern half of the Côte d'Or. Compared with the Côte de Nuits, the slope here is less uniformly east-facing, curving through a wider range of orientations around towns such as Pommard, Volnay, Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet, which contributes to a greater proportion of Chardonnay being grown alongside Pinot Noir. The Côte de Beaune is home to nearly all of Burgundy's white Grand Cru vineyards, including Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet and Corton-Charlemagne, as well as celebrated red communes such as Pommard and Volnay. The underlying geology is a continuation of the same Jurassic limestone-marl escarpment as the Côte de Nuits, but with local variation in exposure, marl content and drainage that favours Chardonnay in several of its most famous communes.

Climate & Season

The climate is broadly similar to the Côte de Nuits, cool and semi-continental, though the wider range of slope orientation across the Côte de Beaune creates more site-to-site variation in effective warmth than the more uniformly east-facing Côte de Nuits.

Rainfall & Water

Rainfall is moderate, generally in the 700–750 mm range, without significant drought stress; drainage on the limestone slopes is generally reliable, with more fertile, moisture-retentive soils found on the valley floor.

Maritime / Continental Influence

As with the rest of the Côte d'Or, there is essentially no maritime influence here; the climate is shaped by inland, continental conditions and the local topography of the escarpment.

Mountains & Topography

The escarpment continues south from the Côte de Nuits at a broadly similar elevation, but with more curves and variation in slope angle, creating distinct exposures that favour different grape varieties from one commune to the next.

Wind

As on the Côte de Nuits, cold air drainage and frost pooling at the base of the slope are more locally significant than prevailing regional wind patterns.

Vintage

Vintage variation is significant for both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay: spring frost, flowering conditions and the timing of late-summer rain all affect quality and yield, with Chardonnay generally somewhat more forgiving than the region's Pinot Noir.

Jurassic limestone and marl (mid-slope)The primary Premier and Grand Cru soil band, varying in marl and clay content from commune to commune; higher marl content in communes such as Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet is closely associated with the region's finest Chardonnay.
