The climate is broadly similar to Hermitage in character, transitional continental-Mediterranean, but without the concentrated thermal amplification of the single Hermitage hill, giving generally milder, more even ripening conditions across the appellation's flatter terrain.
Rainfall is moderate, generally in the 750–800 mm range, similar to Hermitage; drainage varies with the underlying terrain, generally slower on the flatter alluvial plains than on the low hills nearer Hermitage.
There is no direct maritime influence; the appellation's climate reflects the wider Rhône corridor rather than any single dominant local feature.
Terrain is generally gentle, low hills and plains rather than the steep, singular mass of neighbouring Hermitage, though a band of low hills close to Hermitage shares some of its granite character and is generally associated with the appellation's more structured wines.
