Overview
Entre-Deux-Mers is a legally defined Bordeaux appellation occupying the broad upland between the Garonne to the south and Dordogne to the north. A Tertiary limestone platform, generally around 60–100 m, is dissected by many streams into plateaux, rolling slopes and small valleys. Clay-limestone soils dominate, with loess-derived silty boulbènes, gravelly slope deposits and river alluvium adding marked variation. The two tidal rivers moderate seasonal extremes, while south-easterly airflow can be drier than Atlantic westerlies. Rainfall remains significant, but the eastern sector is among the drier parts of Gironde. The appellation now supports both dry white blends and red Bordeaux blends.

Climate & Season

Entre-Deux-Mers has a temperate oceanic climate with mild winters, warm summers and an April-to-October growing season. Its inland position east of Bordeaux allows somewhat greater day-night variation than the estuary-facing districts, while plateau height, slope and exposure create meaningful mesoclimate differences.

Rainfall & Water

Rain falls through the year, but spatial studies show the eastern Entre-Deux-Mers among the drier vineyard sectors of Gironde, commonly around 750–810 mm annually, with wetter western and southern areas. Clay retains moisture, while limestone, gravel and exposed slopes improve drainage and can increase summer water stress.

Maritime / Continental Influence

Atlantic weather systems provide the broad oceanic regime, but the Garonne and Dordogne are the defining local water bodies. Tidal influence penetrates far inland and helps smooth seasonal temperature fluctuations. South-easterly winds are generally drier than Atlantic westerlies, moderating humidity during some periods.

Mountains & Topography

There are no mountains. The region is a rolling limestone plateau, commonly around 60–100 m, deeply cut by streams into ridges, côtes and small valleys. Slope position changes drainage, exposure and frost behaviour, while valley bottoms tend to be cooler, moister and less favourable to consistent ripening.

Wind

Atlantic westerlies and south-westerlies bring humid weather and ventilation, while established south-easterly flows are typically drier. Open hilltops and slopes gain useful airflow, but sheltered valleys can remain humid. Wind therefore interacts strongly with topography in canopy drying and fungal-disease pressure.

Vintage

Vintage sensitivity is moderate to high. Spring frost in low sites, flowering rain, mildew pressure, summer drought or heat, and September–October rainfall can all shift ripening and harvest decisions. The broad topographic and soil mosaic spreads risk rather than producing one uniform response.
