Graves
Graves has a temperate oceanic climate with mild winters, warm summers and a long April-to-October growing season. Its position south of Bordeaux and the heat-retaining behaviour of gravelly surfaces can advance ripening locally, while Atlantic weather keeps the season humid and variable rather than consistently dry.
Bordeaux-area normals indicate roughly 900–1,000 mm of rain annually, distributed through the year with wetter autumn and winter periods. Gravelly terraces shed water rapidly, while sand, clay and silt layers alter storage. Water status therefore depends strongly on soil depth, texture and the timing of summer rain.
The Atlantic Ocean provides the broad climatic framework through western France, while the Garonne acts as the appellation's principal local temperature regulator. The river moderates extremes along the eastern side; inland and forest-edge sectors experience slightly different airflow and humidity, but no strong continental mechanism defines the region.
Graves has no mountains. Its key landforms are low river terraces, gravel croupes and gentle slopes built by successive Garonne deposits. Even modest changes in relief affect drainage and cold-air movement, separating elevated, free-draining gravel from lower, deeper or more clay-influenced ground.
Prevailing Atlantic westerlies and south-westerlies bring both ventilation and weather systems into the region. The Landes pine forest provides partial shelter from the west and south-west, while open terraces remain exposed to airflow. Wind is a secondary force beside rainfall, drainage and river moderation.
Vintage sensitivity is moderate to high. Flowering conditions, summer heat and drought, mildew pressure, and rain during September and October can shift ripening pace and harvest timing. Gravel drains wet years efficiently, but lighter soils can become water-stressed in hot, dry seasons.
- Ripening Window —Region III heat, long autumns and heat-storing gravel usually allow both Cabernet and earlier Merlot to ripen, while dry whites retain a broad picking window.

After cultivar and human choices intervene, Graves commonly produces Cabernet-Merlot reds and dry Sauvignon-Sémillon whites with structure, freshness and ageing potential.
