Lions River is a Wine of Origin district in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, centred on rolling agricultural country around Lidgetton, Balgowan and Howick. Vineyards sit at roughly 1,050-1,150 m, where elevation moderates summer heat and sharpens night cooling. Rain falls mainly during the growing season, so ripening overlaps humidity, thunderstorms and hail risk. Ecca and Beaufort sedimentary rocks, interrupted by dolerite intrusions, create contrasting clay-rich and stonier soils. This is a small, young wine area where careful canopy management and flexible harvest timing are central to successful ripening.
