Lower Duivenhoks River is a Wine of Origin district in South Africa's Cape South Coast Region, with no wards. It occupies the lower Duiwenhoks River landscape around Vermaaklikheid, between Heidelberg and Riversdale and close to the Indian Ocean. Low rolling ground, river terraces and open coastal exposure distinguish this compact area. Its defining viticultural feature is the unusual concentration of limestone and other calcium-rich soils, interspersed with shale-derived clay, sandstone material and alluvial deposits. The maritime setting tempers summer heat, while persistent wind reduces vigour and improves ventilation but can increase water demand. Rainfall is modest, so soil depth, water-holding capacity and careful irrigation are important. Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc show particular promise, alongside Pinot Noir, Syrah, Tempranillo and traditional-method sparkling wine.
