Lutzville Valley
Low elevation and abundant sunshine make the district warm overall. Published heat summations vary strongly by site and dataset, from cooler lower-Olifants locations to Region IV at Lutzville. The October-to-April season therefore spans a pronounced coast-to-inland heat gradient.
Rainfall is very low and winter weighted: long-term Lutzville records are about 140 mm annually. Natural rainfall cannot reliably sustain commercial vines, so the Olifants River irrigation system, supplied through the Clanwilliam-Bulshoek scheme, is a defining growing-season resource.
The cold Atlantic is a major modifier rather than a uniform blanket of coolness. Lower-Olifants research shows heat increasing with distance inland. Koekenaap, closer to the ocean, receives the strongest cooling, while river-valley sites farther inland are warmer.
Vineyards occupy low river terraces, old delta surfaces, gentle undulations and coastal plains rather than high mountain slopes. Distance from the river, minor elevation changes and exposure alter drainage, wind and temperature; low blocks can also be vulnerable to flooding.
Westerly and south-westerly Atlantic air is most important near the coast, cooling exposed vineyards while increasing evaporation. Its influence weakens inland, and dry easterly episodes can accelerate water loss and seasonal drying.
Vintage variation centres on irrigation-water availability, heatwaves, low-site frost, river flooding and humidity or rain around harvest. Recent seasons have combined flood pressure, extreme heat and extended leaf wetness within a single growing cycle.
- Ripening Window —Strong heat and sunlight ripen cultivars reliably, but coastal Koekenaap accumulates heat more slowly than warmer inland sites.
- Water & Vigour —Extremely low rainfall makes irrigation central; soil texture and river position govern water holding, vigour and irrigation frequency.
- Exposure & Health —Atlantic winds can cool and dry canopies, while humid mornings, flood-wet sites and dense growth can increase rot pressure.

They create reliable heat but strong irrigation dependence, with cooling, humidity and flood exposure varying sharply from coast to inland.
After cultivar and human choices intervene, the district can support fresh coastal whites alongside fuller inland whites and reds, rather than one uniform style.
