Madiran
Madiran is oceanic in character but sits close enough to the Pyrenean foothills to pick up periodic foehn winds and a wider day-night temperature swing than the Atlantic coast. Summers are warm and humid enough to fully ripen Tannat's thick skins, while variable, often wet autumns make picking-date decisions important for tannin and acidity balance.
Rainfall is comparatively high for a South West France appellation, generally in the 900–1,100 mm range, spread fairly evenly through the year with a spring and autumn tendency to wetter spells. This keeps water stress low in most vintages but raises fungal disease pressure, particularly around flowering and harvest.
The Atlantic remains the primary source of weather systems, moderating temperature extremes and supplying reliable rainfall through the growing season. The Adour river valley and its tributaries also shape local airflow and frost drainage on the lower slopes.
The Pyrenees lie close enough to the south to influence Madiran's mesoclimate directly, most notably through the warm, drying foehn effect as air descends the northern flank of the range. Vineyards on the higher Vic-Bilh hillsides benefit from this drying influence during humid periods.
Prevailing westerly Atlantic airflow dominates, but southerly foehn winds off the Pyrenees can arrive at any point in the season, drying vines and soils quickly after rain. This wind pattern is one of the more distinctive local forces shaping vintage variation here.
Vintage variation is moderate to high: a wet, humid climate means fungal disease pressure, coulure risk at flowering and harvest-time rain are all recurring concerns, offset somewhat by the drying effect of foehn winds when they arrive at the right moment in the season.
