Overview
Marlborough is a Geographical Indication at the northeastern tip of New Zealand's South Island, its wide Wairau Valley and narrower Awatere Valley separated by low hill country. Sitting in the rain shadow of the Richmond Range and Southern Alps, it is drier and sunnier than most of the South Island, while Cook Strait keeps summers cool and nights sharply cold. Free-draining alluvial gravels in the Wairau contrast with stonier, wind-exposed ground in the Awatere, giving two related but distinct mesoclimates within one region. New Zealand's largest wine region by area, Marlborough is closely associated with vivid, aromatic whites shaped by its persistent wind and wide diurnal range.

Marlborough has a cool maritime climate sharpened by a mountain rain shadow: an October-to-April growing season delivers high sunshine and low humidity, while a diurnal range of roughly 10–12°C in summer slows sugar accumulation and preserves acidity through to harvest.

Rainfall & Water

Annual rainfall of around 600–650 mm makes Marlborough one of New Zealand's driest wine regions, with dry autumns generally favouring an extended, low-disease ripening period. Irrigation is widely relied upon through the dry summer, particularly on the Wairau Valley's free-draining gravels.

Maritime / Continental Influence

Cook Strait and the adjacent Pacific waters moderate temperature extremes and feed the persistent afternoon sea breezes that funnel up both the Wairau and Awatere valleys, cooling ripening fruit and reinforcing the region's high diurnal swing.

Mountains & Topography

The Richmond Range and the northern Southern Alps cast a rain shadow that gives Marlborough far lower rainfall than New Zealand's west coast. The Wairau Valley's broad, flat floor contrasts with the narrower, higher and stonier Awatere Valley to the south.

Wind

Strong, persistent northwesterly winds and afternoon sea breezes are a defining feature, most pronounced in the exposed Awatere Valley. Wind slows ripening, increases evapotranspiration and thickens grape skins, while also aiding canopy drying and lowering disease pressure.

Vintage

Vintage variation is driven chiefly by spring frost risk, the timing of autumn rainfall around harvest, and El Niño–Southern Oscillation-linked shifts in wind and rainfall patterns. A dry, settled autumn is generally the strongest predictor of an even vintage.
