Marlborough
Marlborough has a cool maritime climate sharpened by a mountain rain shadow: an October-to-April growing season delivers high sunshine and low humidity, while a diurnal range of roughly 10–12°C in summer slows sugar accumulation and preserves acidity through to harvest.
Annual rainfall of around 600–650 mm makes Marlborough one of New Zealand's driest wine regions, with dry autumns generally favouring an extended, low-disease ripening period. Irrigation is widely relied upon through the dry summer, particularly on the Wairau Valley's free-draining gravels.
Cook Strait and the adjacent Pacific waters moderate temperature extremes and feed the persistent afternoon sea breezes that funnel up both the Wairau and Awatere valleys, cooling ripening fruit and reinforcing the region's high diurnal swing.
The Richmond Range and the northern Southern Alps cast a rain shadow that gives Marlborough far lower rainfall than New Zealand's west coast. The Wairau Valley's broad, flat floor contrasts with the narrower, higher and stonier Awatere Valley to the south.
Strong, persistent northwesterly winds and afternoon sea breezes are a defining feature, most pronounced in the exposed Awatere Valley. Wind slows ripening, increases evapotranspiration and thickens grape skins, while also aiding canopy drying and lowering disease pressure.
Vintage variation is driven chiefly by spring frost risk, the timing of autumn rainfall around harvest, and El Niño–Southern Oscillation-linked shifts in wind and rainfall patterns. A dry, settled autumn is generally the strongest predictor of an even vintage.

After cultivar and human choices intervene, Marlborough commonly produces vivid, aromatic whites and pure-fruited Pinot Noir, with the Awatere generally yielding more taut, mineral wines than the Wairau.
