Napa Valley
Napa Valley follows a Mediterranean pattern of wet winters and long, dry summers. An April-to-October growing season of roughly 200–220 days gives most cultivars secure ripening time, while the valley's north–south orientation creates a steady warming gradient from the bay-cooled south to the sheltered, sun-baked north.
Representative vineyard areas receive roughly 600–900 mm annually, almost all of it between November and March. Stored winter moisture carries vines into the dry season, but summer rainfall is negligible, so soil water-holding capacity and access to irrigation strongly influence vine stress and canopy growth through ripening.
San Pablo Bay is the defining maritime mechanism. Fog and cool marine air move up-valley overnight and burn off by late morning, moderating the southern valley (Carneros, the city of Napa) most strongly; the effect weakens with distance north, leaving Calistoga comparatively insulated from bay cooling.
The Mayacamas Mountains to the west and the Vaca Range to the east frame a valley that narrows and rises toward the north. Benchland sites above the valley floor gain drainage and sun exposure, while elevation and aspect on both ranges create hillside mesoclimates distinct from the floor below.
Afternoon breezes drawn up-valley from San Pablo Bay lower temperatures and aid canopy drying, an effect most pronounced in the south. In recent vintages, late-summer wind events have also been associated with wildfire smoke reaching the valley, an increasingly monitored risk for ripening fruit.
Year-to-year variation is driven mainly by the timing and volume of winter rain, occasional late-summer heat spikes, and periodic wildfire smoke exposure. Napa's mesoclimate diversity spreads this risk unevenly, so a difficult vintage in one sector can coincide with a favourable one in another.

They create a strong south-to-north ripening gradient, uneven water availability and mesoclimate diversity found nowhere else in Napa's neighbouring valleys.
After cultivar and human choices intervene, Napa Valley commonly produces ripe, structured reds anchored by Cabernet Sauvignon, with cooler southern sites yielding brighter, more linear wines.
