Overview
Pessac-Léognan is a legally defined Bordeaux appellation immediately south and west of the city, carved from the northern Graves in 1987. Low Quaternary gravel croupes and terraces dominate the best-drained sites, while sand, clay and limestone-influenced layers create meaningful variation over short distances. The Garonne moderates frost risk to the east; the Landes forest buffers Atlantic winds to the west, while the Bordeaux urban edge adds local warmth in the north. Rainfall is substantial and year-round, so drainage, disease pressure and harvest timing remain important. The appellation supports both Cabernet-Merlot red blends and dry Sauvignon-Sémillon whites.

Climate & Season

Pessac-Léognan has a temperate oceanic climate with mild winters, warm summers and an April-to-October growing season. Bordeaux-Mérignac normals provide a useful local orientation, while urban warmth, gravel exposure and distance from the Garonne create small but meaningful differences in accumulated heat.

Rainfall & Water

The nearby Bordeaux-Mérignac station records about 1,174 mm of annual precipitation for 1991–2020, distributed through the year. Gravel croupes shed water rapidly, while sand, clay and deeper subsoils store more. Summer drought can still matter after dry winters despite the region's comparatively high rainfall.

Maritime / Continental Influence

The Atlantic Ocean sets the broad oceanic regime. Locally, the Garonne reduces temperature extremes and can soften frost risk on eastern sites, while the Landes forest to the west shelters the appellation from stronger Atlantic winds. The influence is maritime rather than continental.

Mountains & Topography

There are no mountains. The defining relief is a sequence of low gravel croupes and gently rolling terraces separated by small streams draining towards the Garonne. Even modest elevation differences improve drainage, alter exposure and distinguish warmer, drier gravel rises from lower, moister ground.

Wind

Prevailing Atlantic westerlies and south-westerlies bring ventilation as well as rain-bearing weather systems. The Landes forest reduces some direct western exposure, while open gravel rises remain well ventilated. Wind helps dry canopies, but humid maritime air means airflow does not remove fungal-disease pressure.

Vintage

Vintage sensitivity is moderate to high. Spring frost, wet flowering, mildew pressure, summer drought or heat, and September–October rainfall can all alter ripening pace and harvest decisions. Gravelly sites drain quickly after rain but can become more water-stressed during prolonged dry periods.
