Plettenberg Bay is a Wine of Origin district in South Africa's Cape South Coast Region, with no wards currently defined beneath it. The legal district is distinct from the wider Garden Route tourism area. Its modern wine story began when Sauvignon Blanc was planted in 2000 in mountainous terrain around The Crags, approximately 20 km east of Plettenberg Bay. Many vineyards lie only a few kilometres from the Indian Ocean, where maritime air limits temperature extremes and supports a long, measured ripening season. Rain falls through the year rather than following the Cape's strongly winter-dominant pattern, making humidity, canopy ventilation and harvest timing central viticultural concerns. Sandstone- and shale-related soils, mixed slope deposits and locally carbon-rich surface horizons create meaningful site variation across this small, pioneering district.

Climate & Season

Plettenberg Bay has a mild, maritime growing climate with warm rather than hot summers and limited continental extremes. The October-to-April season accumulates heat steadily, broadly near Winkler Region III at the coastal reference point, while exposed and elevated vineyards can behave cooler.

Rainfall & Water

Approximately 600-900 mm of rain falls annually across coastal and mountain-margin positions, with meaningful precipitation in every season. This reduces reliance on winter recharge alone, but summer rain, high humidity and variable soil drainage increase disease pressure and make water management highly site specific.

Maritime / Continental Influence

The Indian Ocean is the district's defining moderator. Many vineyards are close enough to receive regular sea air, cloud and humidity, which temper daytime heat and narrow the day-night range. Inland folds and sheltered sites receive the influence less directly.

Mountains & Topography

Vineyards occupy rolling coastal uplands, forest-edged slopes and valleys beneath the Tsitsikamma-Langkloof mountain system, commonly from about 20 m to 300 m. Slope, elevation and shelter govern drainage, sunlight, cold-air movement and exposure to ocean weather.

Wind

Easterly and south-westerly coastal winds ventilate canopies and constrain heat, particularly on open slopes. Persistent exposure can reduce shoot growth, damage flowering tissue and increase evaporation, while sheltered positions retain more warmth and humidity.

Vintage
