Robertson
Robertson has a warm, semi-arid climate bordering the Klein Karoo, with daytime temperatures often reaching 30°C. Cold winters give vines a proper dormant period, while a strong diurnal swing between hot days and cool nights lets grapes build flavour while retaining acidity.
Annual rainfall is scant, generally around 400mm, making the district reliant on the Breede River for irrigation through the long dry summer. Without the river, sustained viticulture here would be difficult; with it, the district supports a wide range of styles.
Robertson sits well inland, but south-easterly breezes from the Indian Ocean, some 90km away, still reach the valley, bringing occasional mist and moderating the day's heat. This distant maritime influence is gentler than in coastal districts, giving Robertson a more continental character overall.
The Langeberg and surrounding ranges shelter Robertson from direct ocean exposure, helping create its warm, dry mesoclimate. Vineyards spread along the Breede River valley floor and its tributaries, with soil rather than elevation the main driver of site character.
South-easterly winds off the Indian Ocean provide intermittent relief from the day's heat and help keep canopies dry, though their cooling effect is milder here than in districts closer to the coast, leaving Robertson's days consistently warm.
Vintage variation in Robertson tracks irrigation water availability, the intensity of summer heat, and the timing of any late-season rain. Because the district depends on the Breede River rather than winter rainfall alone, water management decisions can matter as much as the weather itself.
