Overview
Robertson lies inland along the Breede River, sheltered from the Atlantic by the Cape's coastal mountains and bordering the semi-arid Klein Karoo. Rainfall is scant, around 400mm a year, so the Breede River is the district's lifeline, supplying irrigation to vineyards that would otherwise struggle through the dry summer. South-easterly breezes from the Indian Ocean, some 90 kilometres away, bring occasional relief and mist, and warm days give way to noticeably cooler nights. What sets Robertson apart is its soil: alongside alluvial river-valley soils and red, gravelly ground reminiscent of the nearby Karoo, pockets of limestone run through the district, giving its Chardonnay a chalky minerality often compared to Chablis. The result is a district equally suited to vivid whites and structured reds.
