Saint-Émilion
Saint-Émilion has a temperate oceanic climate with mild winters, warm summers and an April-to-October growing season. Bordeaux-area 1991–2020 normals average about 14.2°C annually. Heat accumulation is broadly consistent with Winkler Region III, allowing Merlot to ripen reliably while later Cabernet varieties remain more sensitive to site and season.
The wider Bordeaux climate receives roughly 900–950 mm of rain annually, with precipitation possible throughout the year and higher totals outside midsummer. Water behaviour therefore depends heavily on soil and position: limestone and gravel promote drainage, while clay-rich profiles retain more moisture and can sustain vines through dry summer periods.
Atlantic influence reaches Saint-Émilion indirectly through the Bordeaux basin, while the Dordogne and nearby Isle moderate local temperature extremes and humidity. The appellation is less directly maritime than the Médoc, so inland heat can build more readily, but river proximity and regional oceanic airflow still reduce continental extremes.
Saint-Émilion has no mountains, but relief is central to its identity. The limestone plateau, steep and moderate côtes, dissected valleys, gravel terrace and lower Dordogne plain create changes in drainage, soil depth, exposure and cold-air movement over short distances. Elevation is modest, but topographic position strongly affects vine water status and ripening pace.
No single named wind defines the appellation. Prevailing Atlantic airflow, local valley circulation and river-influenced breezes provide ventilation, but exposure varies between open plateau edges, slopes and sheltered depressions. Air movement can accelerate canopy drying after rain, while enclosed valleys may retain more humidity and cold air.
Vintage sensitivity is moderate to high. Flowering conditions, summer heat and water balance, and September–October rainfall can alter berry size, disease pressure and harvest timing. Clay-rich sites often buffer dry summers better than shallow or freely drained profiles, while wetter autumns increase pressure on later-ripening Cabernet and low-lying sites.
