Overview
Savoie's vineyards are scattered rather than continuous, occupying pockets of favourable, generally south-facing slope around Chambéry, Annecy and the shores of Lake Geneva and Lac du Bourget in the French Alps. Elevation, typically 250–500 metres and rising higher in places, is the single most defining force here, giving Savoie a cool, alpine-continental climate with a wide swing between warm daytime and cool night-time temperatures that helps preserve aromatic freshness and acidity. The region relies heavily on grape varieties found almost nowhere else in France: Jacquère, a light, crisp, high-acid white grape that is the region's most planted variety; Altesse (also called Roussette), used for more structured whites under the separate Roussette de Savoie appellation; and Mondeuse, a distinctive, peppery, deeply coloured red grape. Small amounts of Gamay, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are also grown. The nearby lakes moderate frost risk locally and contribute to the region's tradition of light, fresh, often slightly effervescent (pétillant) styles.
