Walla Walla Valley is an American Viticultural Area straddling the Washington–Oregon border, its boundary set by the valley formed at the foot of the Blue Mountains rather than by either state line. Warmer and wetter than the broader Columbia Valley that contains it, the AVA benefits from cooling air drawn down from the Blue Mountains, which moderates an otherwise warm continental climate and helps preserve acidity through a long, hot growing season. Rainfall varies sharply across the valley, from around 230 mm in the drier west to over 550 mm nearer the mountains, and soils shift from wind-blown loess to river-deposited cobblestone.
