Wellington has a warm Mediterranean pattern with cool, wet winters and hot, dry summers. A mean February temperature near 23.2°C and a documented heat-summation calculation place the representative inland climate in Winkler Region IV; higher and shaded foothill sites accumulate less heat.
Annual rainfall is about 740 mm and falls mainly in winter. Dry summers increase reliance on stored soil moisture, rooting depth and supplementary irrigation where available. Water supply and vigour differ between deeper alluvial or clay-bearing sites and shallow, freely draining mountain soils.
Direct maritime cooling is not a defining district-wide force. Wellington lies well inland of the Atlantic despite its legal Coastal Region status. Mountain proximity, elevation and local airflow have more immediate effects, with the strongest cooling in exposed foothill and valley positions.
The Groenberg, Hawequa and Limietberg ranges frame river terraces, rolling ground, foothills and narrow valleys. Documented vineyards span roughly 90-386 m at district orientation scale. Vintage variation is driven chiefly by winter rainfall, spring rain and wind, summer heat and late-season showers. Regional reports show wet, windy springs reducing set and increasing mildew pressure, while heat and water stress can accelerate ripening on exposed sites.

Warm inland summers, winter rainfall, mountain foothills and mixed granite-, sandstone-, shale- and alluvial landscapes interact across the district.
They create a Region IV ripening baseline with cooler elevated pockets, uneven water availability and strong differences in wind and sun exposure between sites.
After cultivar and human choices intervene, Wellington commonly supports generous Chenin Blanc and structured red wines, with expression changing materially by ward, slope and soil.
