Worcester sits in the rain shadow of the surrounding mountains, so rainfall on the valley floor is low and irrigation is essential for most vineyards. Areas closer to the mountain margins, particularly toward Tulbagh, receive noticeably more rain than the district's hot interior.
Well inland and shielded by the Hex River, Langeberg, Boland and Riviersonderend mountains, Worcester receives little direct maritime moderation. This continental isolation is the defining force in the district's climate, producing hotter days and a drier growing season than the coastal districts.
