Overview
Gualtallary is a high-altitude Indicación Geográfica within the Tupungato department, at the northern edge of Mendoza's Uco Valley. Vineyards here climb to as much as 1,600 metres, among the highest plantings anywhere in Mendoza, placing Gualtallary at the extreme edge of the region's viticultural limits. The Andes, immediately to the west, cast the rain shadow that keeps rainfall below 230 mm a year, while the same altitude that limits rainfall also drives one of the widest diurnal temperature swings of any wine region in the world, sometimes reaching 20°C between day and night. Rocky, alluvial and notably calcareous soils, rarer elsewhere in Mendoza, add a further layer of mineral character. Gualtallary is closely associated with Malbec at its most vertical and mineral, generally considered among Argentina's most distinctive high-altitude expressions.
