Overview
Uco Valley is a high-altitude sub-region of Mendoza, its vineyards rising from around 900 metres on the valley floor to over 1,700 metres at its highest plantings in the foothills of the Andes. Almost no useful rain falls here; the region exists as a fine-wine landscape only because of precise irrigation drawn from Andean snowmelt. What altitude and aridity create, however, is one of the widest diurnal temperature swings of any serious wine region, with days that can be twenty degrees warmer than the night that follows. Stony, alluvial soils washed down from the Andes add further restraint to vigour. Uco Valley is closely associated with Malbec at its most concentrated and aromatically precise, generally considered Mendoza's most prestigious sub-region.

Climate & Season

A semi-arid, continental high-desert climate combines a long growing season of 250 or more sunny days with a diurnal swing of up to 20°C, driven chiefly by altitude rather than latitude. This range is the single most defining climatic feature of Uco Valley viticulture.

Rainfall & Water

Annual rainfall of under 200 mm makes natural precipitation viticulturally negligible; vines depend entirely on precision irrigation sourced from Andean snowmelt, giving growers close, deliberate control over vine water status through the season.

Maritime / Continental Influence

Not a defining regional force: Uco Valley lies far from any ocean, and its climate is entirely continental and altitude-driven. Its defining water input, Andean snowmelt, is a mountain rather than a maritime mechanism.

Mountains & Topography

The Andes, immediately to the west, are the region's dominant force. Altitude across Uco Valley's vineyards, from roughly 900 to over 1,700 metres, is the principal driver of both the region's cool nights and the meaningful climatic differences between its lower and higher plantings.

Wind

The Zonda, a hot, dry foehn wind that occasionally descends the eastern slope of the Andes, is Uco Valley's most consequential named wind event, capable of causing sudden heat spikes and vine stress; more routine daytime breezes otherwise aid canopy drying in this already dry climate.

Vintage

Hail is the dominant source of vintage variation in Uco Valley and across Mendoza generally, with localised but sometimes severe storms capable of destroying a season's crop on affected sites; spring frost at the highest elevations is a secondary risk.
