Annual rainfall of under 200 mm makes natural precipitation viticulturally negligible; vines depend entirely on precision irrigation sourced from Andean snowmelt, giving growers close, deliberate control over vine water status through the season.
Not a defining regional force: Uco Valley lies far from any ocean, and its climate is entirely continental and altitude-driven. Its defining water input, Andean snowmelt, is a mountain rather than a maritime mechanism.
The Andes, immediately to the west, are the region's dominant force. Altitude across Uco Valley's vineyards, from roughly 900 to over 1,700 metres, is the principal driver of both the region's cool nights and the meaningful climatic differences between its lower and higher plantings.
The Zonda, a hot, dry foehn wind that occasionally descends the eastern slope of the Andes, is Uco Valley's most consequential named wind event, capable of causing sudden heat spikes and vine stress; more routine daytime breezes otherwise aid canopy drying in this already dry climate.
Hail is the dominant source of vintage variation in Uco Valley and across Mendoza generally, with localised but sometimes severe storms capable of destroying a season's crop on affected sites; spring frost at the highest elevations is a secondary risk.
